The Committee was established in June 2026. It focuses on:

early years, childcare and wraparound care
schools, colleges and universities
Additional Support Needs and support for learning
apprenticeships and Skills Development Scotland
child protection and looked-after children
the Children’s Hearings system
youth work
children's rights and services
Gaelic, Scots and BSL
community learning and development
the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry and Scotland's Redress Scheme.

Work of the Committee: Future work

At its first meeting on 23 June 2026, the Committee agreed to invite the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Culture and Gaelic to give evidence following the announcement of the Programme for Government.

The Committee also agreed to hold a business planning event in the summer recess during which it will discuss its future work programme.
