Local authority approaches to school education

A 2025 report by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Education in Scotland investigated how local authorities support school improvement.

While there were many good elements, the report outlined some significant challenges, including:

  • inconsistent support provided to schools, both within and across local authorities
  • self-evaluation processes, which are not always rigorous
  • an inconsistent approach to leadership development, which can impact on continuous improvement

The Committee wants to understand how local authorities are responding to the report.

It is also interested in how local authorities are sharing good practice with each other.
