About the Scottish Parliament

Conveners Group

Each committee in the Parliament has a convener. The Conveners Group is made up of all the conveners. It is chaired by the Presiding Officer or a Deputy Presiding Officer.

The Conveners Group meets regularly to:

  • discuss issues affecting committees
  • communicate between the committees and other parts of the Parliament, like the Parliamentary Bureau and SPCB
  • look at how committees are working
  • make recommendations to the Parliamentary Bureau about committee business in the Chamber
  • approve committee meetings taking place outside of Edinburgh
  • approve committee travel outside the UK

The rules about how the Conveners Group works are in Chapter 6A of the Standing Orders.

Strategic objectives

This session, the group has agreed to focus on four areas where it feels it can bring improvements to the scrutiny role of the Scottish Parliament:

  • help committees find ways to work together on issues of shared interest, including on scrutiny of issues relating to the UK having left the EU; and holding the Scottish Government to account for how it delivers on Net Zero targets
  • find improvements in how the views of everyone in Scotland can support better scrutiny by parliamentary committees
  • find ways to review laws that have been passed by the Scottish Parliament and whether they are working as intended
  • help Members access training and support so they can best fulfil their roles as Parliamentarians

Next meeting

The next meeting of the Conveners Group is on 24 April 2024.
