We are quorate, so I shall begin. I ask members to switch off their mobile phones as usual. I have received apologies from Colin Fox, Maureen Macmillan and Nicola Sturgeon.

I ask the committees whether they wish to consider item 2 in private. Item 2 relates to the consideration of candidates for the post of adviser to assist the committees in their scrutiny of the 2005-06 budget process.

Before we proceed, I wish to say in public session that I know one of the applicants well. Under those circumstances, I do not propose either to speak about or to vote on the appointment of an adviser.
