We have decided to address the problem of the ram scheme because it was not fully discussed in the debate and the minister appears to have written it off very quickly on the basis of what we consider to be a flawed report, to which Mr Morrison will speak.Our contention is that the sheep sector is of vital importance to the economy of the Highlands and Islands, especially in the areas where the burden of disadvantage is greatest, where the feasibility of doing anything other than farming sheep is limited, and where the uptake of rams from the LIS is greatest, namely Wester Ross, Skye, Argyll and the Western Isles.Recently released Quality Meat Scotland figures show that there are about 600,000 ewes in the Highlands and Islands Enterprise area.
