The convener will not be surprised that I have a question on the performance management review of Historic Scotland. Hardly a month goes by without an MSP expressing a particular difficulty with Historic Scotland.
The meeting had to be co-ordinated with the diaries of those people so, unfortunately, it was held on a Monday, which is a constituency day for MSPs. For that reason, members of the Education, Culture and Sport Committee were unable to attend.
Petition Asbestos (PE336) I welcome Duncan McNeil MSP, who has come along for item 2, which concerns petition PE336.The petition is from Frank Maguire on behalf of Clydeside Action on Asbestos and relates to civil justice for asbestos victims.
I greatly regret it, particularly as I am a South of Scotland MSP. However, there is nothing that I can do—I have a long-standing commitment to attend the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.I expect that my colleague, Christine Grahame, will request to attend some of the meetings.
That was unfortunately short notice, as we were unable to apply in time to the conveners liaison group, which needs six weeks' notice. It turns out that MSPs are the only group of politicians to be absent from that major conference on the CFP.
Last week, I attended a meeting of the west end community council as a constituency MSP; I am all too aware of the importance of this issue throughout Scotland.
We may still want to appoint lead members to carry the inquiry through, but I suspect that, considering the time scale and members' commitments, we may not want to leave work of that scale too much in MSPs' hands. The reporters should identify the task and what needs to be done, then map out with officials a way of ensuring that that is done properly.
I hope that the committee will support it.We discussed this petition at the Rural Affairs Committee yesterday. Two of the Borders MSPs, Christine Grahame and Euan Robson, were at the committee to support it.
