The European Commission has given its views on what it considers to be the applicability under European law of a requirement on contractors to pay the living wage, which I set out in my original answer.That said, the Government is strongly supportive of the principle of the living wage—in fact, we have led by example in paying our employees the living wage—so we are keen to explore all opportunities to promote that further, and encourage other public authorities to do likewise.

I also add my voice to those of members who have paid tribute to our first responders and to people who work in our local authorities who put everything on the line to serve the communities that they live and work in. I am particularly mindful of people living in the immediate vicinity of River Street in Brechin, because quite a few of the people who live on that street are seniors, and they have lost their homes and cherished possessions.
