I do not think that £7 million is too much. As I hope the committee is aware, with the abandonment of the current system for benefit payments, part of the agreement is to introduce a postal charge card.
The important point about the regulations is that they complete the committee's historic piece of legislation, the Protection from Abuse (Scotland) Act 2001, which we welcome. The act will come into force on 7 February and will provide legal aid for those arrested under it.
I suggest to the committee that we now consider item 7, which involves going back over old ground, for some of us, in the form of our report on legal aid.
I am particularly interested in the report's recommendations 7 and 8, which ask for evidence in the form of videotapes of interviews to be admissible as evidence and heard by the court.
