Saints Fans Supporting Foodbanks

  • Submitted by: Jim Fairlie, Perthshire South and Kinross-shire, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 05 April 2023
  • Motion type: Standard Motion
  • Motion reference: S6M-08487

That the Parliament welcomes the football fan-led initiative, Saints Fans Supporting Foodbanks, that launched prior to St Johnstone’s Scottish Premiership game at McDiarmid Park against Aberdeen on 1 April 2023; understands that home and away supporters are encouraged to drop off non-perishable foodstuffs and toiletries at a collection point outside the stadium prior to the start of the match, and that the initiative is supportive of the idea that "there are no rivalries between fans and fans of both clubs who both want to give help to the most needy in their community"; notes that Fans Supporting Foodbanks Scotland was established in 2022 with the aim of having supporters of all 42 SPFL clubs involved in collecting items at their matches, and that donations made at McDiarmid Park, will be given to Perth and Kinross Foodbank; regrets that, in 2023, there is a need for food banks in what it considers a resource-rich nation such as Scotland, but nevertheless congratulates all involved for initiating this community project at St Johnstone, including the club, and wishes the initiative every success.
