That the Parliament recognises the Orkney Sports Awards 2021, which took place on 28 January 2022; notes that the awards are sponsored by The Orcadian and various other local businesses, and organised by Orkney Islands Council’s active schools team, with the aim of recognising and celebrating sporting achievement and success within the county; understands that there were 27 nominees for the eight awards, which took place at the Orkney Theatre in Kirkwall with an in-person ceremony for nominees that was live-streamed to the wider public; congratulates Matthew Byers, who was crowned Orkney’s Sportsperson of the Year for 2021, ahead of his debut at the British Weightlifting Senior Championships, and Max Linklater, who picked up the Young Sportsperson of the Year, after an impressive year competing for Orkney at national level across various athletic disciplines; acknowledges and congratulates the other award winners, John Cairns, Coach of the Year, Michael Swanney and Melissa Lindsay, Volunteer and Schools Sports Volunteer of the Year respectively, Orkney RFC's First XV and under-16s, Team and Youth Team of the Year respectively, and Orkney's inter-county football team, which won Performance of the Year for what it sees as the outstanding win against Shetland in July 2021, which secured the Milne Cup and marked Orkney’s first win in Shetland for 40 years; welcomes the Services to Sports awards, which, it understands, were presented to two stalwarts of Orkney sport, Calvin Poke in football and Fraser Murray in athletics; further congratulates Rognvald Omand, Betty Stanger and Melvin Wick, who were all inducted into the Orkney Sports Hall of Fame, supported by SportsScotland, for their achievements in swimming, squash and badminton respectively; believes that all of the nominees and winners reflect the strength, breadth and depth of sporting talent in Orkney; pays tribute to all the volunteers, family members and sponsors who make sport possible for all ages and abilities; believes that the importance of sport and physical activity has been underscored during the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic; thanks the Orkney Islands Council’s active schools team for its hard work in organising the 2021 Orkney Sports Awards, and looks forward to celebrating more Orkney sporting success over the course of the next 12 months.
