Potential Impact of a No-deal Brexit on Florists

  • Submitted by: Mark McDonald, Aberdeen Donside, Independent.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 27 August 2020
  • Motion reference: S5M-22562

That the Parliament acknowledges the concerns raised by the British Florist Association and felt throughout the industry in response to the proposed tariff on cut-flowers entering the UK from 1 January 2021; notes that a tariff of 8% will be incurred if no deal is struck with the EU and that supplementary documentation and administration requirements, together with enhanced border checks, are expected to delay imports, which might result in decreased product quality; believes with regret that a no-deal scenario looks increasingly likely; considers that this will have a significant detrimental impact on businesses that are currently struggling to recover from the COVID-19 lockdown restrictions, and calls on the UK Government to expedite negotiations to protect the livelihoods of those working in the floral sector and other businesses as the end of the Brexit transition period approaches.
