North Uist Distillery Acquires Nunton Steadings

  • Submitted by: Alasdair Allan, Na h-Eileanan an Iar, Scottish National Party
  • Date lodged: Friday, 17 July 2020
  • Motion type: Standard Motion
  • Motion reference: S5M-22289

That the Parliament congratulates the North Uist Distillery on acquiring the historic Nunton Steadings in Benbecula as the future premises for its distillery and visitor centre; understands that the building had previously lain vacant and was in danger of falling into disrepair; welcomes the distillery’s decision to repurpose the property instead of pursuing a new-build site on the Iollaraigh common grazings; notes that the Nunton Steadings was constructed in the 18th century and is one of the oldest extant buildings in Na h-Eileanan an Iar; understands that the steading is believed to sit on the site of the eponymous medieval convent that gave rise to Baile nan Cailleach, or the "township of the nuns"; notes that Bonnie Prince Charlie is believed to have stayed in the steading shortly before making the famous journey "over the sea to Skye" with Flora MacDonald, a relative of the Captain of Clanranald who owned Nunton House, and wishes the North Uist Distillery continued success with its new endeavour.
