Scottish Young Carers Services Alliance Showcase Conference

  • Submitted by: Jeremy Balfour, Lothian, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 26 March 2019
  • Motion reference: S5M-16563

That the Parliament acknowledges the Scottish Young Carers Services Alliance Showcase Conference on 29 March 2019 at the Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow; notes the extensive survey work by young carers services, which estimates that there are at least 100,000 children and young people in Scotland with unpaid caring responsibilities; recognises what it sees as the immense contribution that young carers make by providing care to a family member or friend with an illness, disability, mental illness and/or addiction problems who could not cope without their support; understands that these children and young people are not always recognised by education, health and social care professionals as undertaking a caring role; believes that mandatory and continued professional development training could improve awareness of young carers' needs so that professionals are better able to identify and support them; considers that young carers can greatly benefit from dedicated peer groups and support services, and believes that they should be identified and provided with appropriate services and support to help maintain their physical and mental health and wellbeing so that they can reach their full potential and enjoy a life alongside caring.
