That the Parliament recognises the value of outdoor learning opportunities that equip children and young people with essential water safety knowledge and practical swimming skills; notes that an event was held to mark National Drowning Prevention Week by allowing up to 100 pupils from West Dunbartonshire take part in a unique open water swimming experience at Loch Lomond to equip them with vital water safety skills; commends Scottish Swimming, West Dunbartonshire Leisure Trust, Loch Lomond Rescue Boat, Police Scotland, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park for working together to deliver a comprehensive water safety lesson and provide expert guidance and support to young people; believes that participation in open water activities can help build confidence, resilience and awareness of the risks associated with Scotland’s lochs, rivers and coastlines; notes that the hands-on learning experience provides pupils with the opportunity to learn life-saving skills, safe entry and exit techniques, floating, self-rescue strategies and how to respond in an emergency; acknowledges reported concerns regarding accidental drownings and highlights the importance of improving water safety education for children and young people across Scotland, and believes that swimming and water safety are fundamental life skills that should be accessible to all pupils, regardless of background or ability.
