Congratulating Oxgangs Library on Being Named the Best in Scotland at the British Book Awards 2026 Library of the Year

  • Submitted by: Sue Webber, Lothian, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 17 March 2026
  • Motion type: Standard Motion
  • Motion reference: S6M-21123

That the Parliament congratulates Oxgangs Library in Edinburgh on being named the best in Scotland at the British Book Awards 2026 Library of the Year; understands that Oxgangs Library beat competition from seven other Scottish libraries to be crowned the Scottish regional and country winner; further understands that the judges were impressed by its Secret Santa programme at HMP Edinburgh, providing gift-wrapped books for prisoners and demonstrating the ability to build connections between public and prison library services and inspiring engagement in reading; acknowledges the benefits that libraries and their services bring, being at the heart of a reading culture and activating interest from new readers, and reactivating it where it has lapsed, through a love of books; recognises that the overall winner of Library of the Year will be revealed on 11 May 2026, and wishes Oxgangs Library every success with this and its continued success in future community projects.
