That the Parliament celebrates International Mother Language Day (IMLD) 2026; notes that IMLD was established by UNESCO in 1999 to promote international understanding through multilingualism and multiculturalism; understands that it is observed annually on 21 February; recognises that the day is now marked across the globe as a reminder of the world’s rich linguistic diversity, with an estimated 6,500 languages spoken worldwide, and the urgent need to preserve and protect these languages for future generations; acknowledges that the initiative was first commemorated in Bangladesh in memory of three students from the University of Dhaka who were killed on 21 February 1952 while advocating for official recognition of the Bangla (Bengali) language; notes that this year’s theme, Youth Voices on Multilingual Education, highlights the vital role that young people play in a rapidly changing and technologically advancing world in defending and revitalising languages through digital content creation and innovative use of technologies that make linguistic diversity more visible and valued; commends the Scottish Bangladeshi Welfare Association for organising this year’s IMLD celebration at Bonnyrigg Guide Hall, which brought together intergenerational members of the community to reflect on the importance of language, heritage and collective wellbeing; notes that guest speakers led two key sessions on education and mental health, reinforcing the cultural, historical and emotional wellbeing linked to people’s mother languages; recognises what it sees as the vital role of community-led programmes across Edinburgh and the Lothians in preserving cultural heritage while promoting health awareness and overall wellbeing; believes that the event truly reflected the spirit of International Mother Language Day, and wishes it continued success and growth across Scotland and around the world.
