That the Parliament recognises the extraordinary life and service of Albert Lamond, a Glasgow-born Royal Navy signalman from the East End and one of Scotland’s last surviving D-Day veterans, who has passed away aged 100; notes that, at just 18 years old, Albert served aboard HMS Rowley during the Allied invasion of Normandy on 6 June 1944, protecting HMS Warspite as it shelled German positions, and later served in the Pacific, assisting in the evacuation of allied prisoners of war to Australia; acknowledges the courage, humility and dedication with which Albert carried out his duties, always emphasising that he was “just doing his duty” and carrying with him the memory of those who did not survive; understands the importance of preserving the experiences of Glasgow veterans such as Albert, whose personal recollections provide vital insight into the realities and sacrifices of war and lessons for future generations; notes the pride and admiration expressed by his family, including his nephew Martin Lamond, and by the Glasgow community and the staff and residents of the Erskine Veterans Village where Albert lived in later life and shared his experiences to educate and inspire others; recognises Albert's contribution to ensuring that the stories of D-Day and the wider Second World War campaigns are remembered, including his reflections on the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings in 2024, and acknowledges the enduring legacy of his life, both as a serviceman from Glasgow’s East End and as a committed member of the veteran community.
