That the Parliament recognises that 2 February 2026 marked World Wetlands Day, which had the theme, Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage; considers that Scotland’s peatlands, including in Lewis and Strathglass in the Highlands and Islands, are an internationally important rare wetland habitat for many endangered animals and plants, such as golden plover and otter; believes that these are an important part of Scotland’s cultural heritage, as recognised by the designation of the Flow Country as a UNESCO World Heritage Site; notes that this is a landscape that people have lived in and worked for thousands of years; is concerned at the delay to the implementation of the new statutory Muirburn Code under the Wildlife Management and Muirburn (Scotland) Act 2024; is further concerned at the reported increasing prevalence of invasive non-native sitka spruce seedlings on peatland, including peatland that has been restored using Scottish Government funding; recognises the Scottish Government’s recently stated aim of restoring 400,000 hectares of peatland by 2040, and hopes that Scotland’s peatlands can be protected and restored at scale as part of the Scottish Government’s “30 by 30” commitment and Net Zero policy.
