That the Parliament welcomes World Basking Shark Day 2025, which is celebrated on 3 November every year; acknowledges that this event is a key opportunity to raise awareness of what it sees as an important species of fish, which can grow up to 12 metres long and is the second largest species of fish in the world; notes that basking sharks have been classified as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, which, it believes, has resulted from multiple factors including hunting, entanglement and bycatch, and changes to their food sources as a result of climate change; welcomes measures to protect basking sharks, including the first-of-its-kind Sea of the Hebrides Marine Protected Area (MPA), covering 3,800 square miles of sea and designated to protect basking sharks, minke whales and seabed habitat, and further welcomes the forthcoming consultation on fisheries management measures in inshore MPAs, including the Sea of the Hebrides MPA, and Priority Marine Features, which it sees as a crucial opportunity to provide much needed protections for vulnerable or ecologically important marine species and habitats, and help improve the health of Scotland's seas.
