Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

  • Submitted by: Jackie Baillie, Dumbarton, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 02 September 2025
  • Motion reference: S6M-18668

That the Parliament recognises that September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month; notes that approximately 320 children and young people under 25 are diagnosed with cancer each year in Scotland, around 135 of whom are children; acknowledges that cancer remains the leading cause of disease-related death in this age group; recognises the unique experiences and distinct challenges faced by children and young people with cancer, including the need for treatment in specialist centres, access to age-appropriate services and unique psychological support; notes with concern that they and their families often face significant additional financial costs because of cancer, including travel costs to access treatment and care; recognises the vital work of the NHS and charities that support children and young people with cancer, and calls on the Scottish Government to work collaboratively with partners to support children and young people with cancer and their families, so that no one faces the challenges of cancer alone.
