Donald Trump’s Visit

  • Submitted by: John Mason, Glasgow Shettleston, Independent.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 07 August 2025
  • Motion reference: S6M-18440

That the Parliament notes the recent private visit to Scotland by the President of the United States, Donald Trump; further notes that UK and EU leaders travelled to Scotland to meet President Trump, and believes that this underscores the key role that Scotland has, and can have, in international relations; understands that the visit, which focused on time at his golf courses in Ayrshire and Aberdeenshire, required a substantial deployment of Police Scotland and other police officers, as well as other public service resources; notes reports that as many as 5,000 officers were involved, including the cancellation of rest days and annual leave, and the redeployment of officers from across the country, placing pressure on routine policing; recognises the professionalism and dedication of all officers and staff involved in the planning of the security operation; believes that, as the visit was not undertaken in any official capacity, the significant costs involved should not be footed by Scottish or UK taxpayers; considers that there is no justifiable reason for either the Scottish or UK public to subsidise the private travel or commercial activity of the President, and hopes to see the recovery of public expenditure from Mr Trump or his associated business interests.
