Welcoming the Free Trade Agreement Between the UK and India

  • Submitted by: Jackie Baillie, Dumbarton, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 15 May 2025
  • Motion type: Standard Motion
  • Motion reference: S6M-17517
  • Current status: Fallen

That the Parliament welcomes what it sees as the transformational new free trade agreement between the United Kingdom and India, which was reached by the UK Government on 13 May 2025, recognising what it considers as the mutual benefits for both countries and the dedication from both sides to complete this landmark deal; acknowledges, in particular, the positive impact that it believes this agreement will have on the Scotch whisky industry by halving the current tariff and reducing it to 40% over the next 10 years, and understands that the industry has long called for a reduction in tariffs with India, which, it believes, will not only open the world’s largest whisky market and support jobs and investment in the UK, but is expected to increase Scotch whisky exports to India by £1 billion and create 1,200 jobs across the UK.
