Global Day of Action Against Nuclear Weapons

  • Submitted by: Bill Kidd, Glasgow Anniesland, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 23 November 2023
  • Motion type: Standard Motion
  • Motion reference: S6M-11395

That the Parliament notes the Global Day of Action Against Nuclear Weapons taking place on 26 November 2023, aimed at calling for an end to nuclear weapons, alongside bringing attention to the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW); further notes that the Second Meeting of States Parties to the TPNW will take place the week of 27 November to 1 December 2023, in the Trusteeship Council at the United Nations Headquarters in New York; understands that the TPNW reached the required 50 state parties for its entry into force on 22 January 2021, when it became binding on the states that ratified it; welcomes the participation of members of Scotland’s civic and political society who will attend as observers, despite what it sees as the UK Government's refusal to acknowledge the Treaty or attend the meeting as an official observer state, and commends all those involved for their dedication to a nuclear weapons-free future.
