BT Jobs in Alness

  • Submitted by: Rhoda Grant, Highlands and Islands, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 26 October 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-10937

That the Parliament notes the reported decision by British Telecom (BT) to close its Alness service centre with the loss of almost 100 jobs; understands that BT, as recently as 2021, named Alness as a "Key Service Centre Location", but now reportedly wants to close the site with the loss of what it considers as crucial jobs; notes what it sees as the positive alternative proposals put forward by the Communication Workers Union (CWU) to maintain employment in Alness; believes that these proposals recognise the unique geography and fragile nature of the local economy, and that the loss of so many jobs would have a very significant social and economic impact, and urges BT to engage constructively with the CWU on what it sees as this credible and practical plan, which, it believes, will ensure that this loyal and long-serving workforce can continue its service with BT, and that the community continues to benefit from hosting the centre.
