Stenness School Reaches Britannica Magazine Schools Quiz Challenge Final

  • Submitted by: Liam McArthur, Orkney Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 18 November 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-06848

That the Parliament congratulates the four pupils from Stenness Primary School in Orkney who have secured a place at the Britannica Magazine Schools Quiz Challenge Final in London on 30 November 2022; recognises that Vaila McIntosh, Annie Kenyon, Joshua Nixon and Jessica Pirie are London bound, thanks to the enormous generosity of the Orkney public who fundraised an outstanding £3,650 in just three hours after an appeal for support from the school; understands that the four pupils saw off competition in an online quiz from 60 other primary schools across the UK to secure one of the four finalist places in the 8-11 age group, with Stenness representing the only Scottish school across the prestigious final; notes that the Britannica Magazine Schools Quiz Challenge is designed to help get pupils interested in non-fiction reading, making learning fun and dynamic, and to help drive reading for pleasure; commends what it sees as the enormous generosity of the Orkney public for their outpouring of support, which far exceeded the original target of £2,000 to supplement the costs of travel and accommodation for the Orkney pupils trip to London; thanks the support of Stenness principal teacher, Vicky Leonard, to the pupils through the competition and for kickstarting the hugely successful public fundraising campaign, and wishes Vaila, Annie, Joshua and Jessica all the very best success at the finals.
