Healthy Valleys Support for Communities in South Lanarkshire

  • Submitted by: Brian Whittle, South Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 22 September 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-05975

That the Parliament commends Healthy Valleys for its continued efforts in delivering projects which encourage local residents in rural South Lanarkshire to walk, cycle, wheel, scoot or use public transport for short, everyday journeys; highlights that the community-led initiative provides a loan scheme for a range of pedal bicycles and power-assisted e-bikes, and helps users to purchase their own e-bikes; further highlights that Healthy Valleys is expanding its efforts to offer eight-week programmes to help residents build confidence using e-bikes; understands that the initiative organises weekly health and buggy walks to help residents of all ages to stay physically active; considers that these projects help the local community maintain and improve their physical health, mental health and social wellbeing; further considers that the initiative also encourages residents to reconnect with their natural environment and better care for nature; notes that Healthy Valleys received support and funding from Scotland’s walking charity, Paths for All, and wishes the initiative continued success in promoting active travel and the need to protect our natural heritage.
