Ending Hunger and Food Insecurity

  • Submitted by: Rhoda Grant, Highlands and Islands, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 23 June 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-05025

That the Parliament recognises the calls from The Larder and third sector organisations, including many in the Highlands and Islands, for decisive action to be taken to ensure that everyone has access to good food; notes that the STUC and TUC have been asked to include the right to good food in their demands ahead of the upcoming Cost of Living summit; believes that there has never been a more pressing time than the current cost of living crisis to call for the Parliament to support the right to food to be enshrined in Scots law; notes that the Food Foundation reported that in April 2022 alone, the number of individuals in the UK experiencing food insecurity has jumped by 57% and that some 7.3 million adults are living in households where people have gone without food or could not physically access it, which include 2.6 million children; further notes that food banks and recovered food organisations have highlighted that their supply chain is shrinking, and considers therefore that alternative responses that provide access to good food with dignity are urgently needed; notes that the Food Foundation report also outlined that food banks are noticing an increase in requests for products that do not need to be cooked as the cost of living crisis bites harder and households cannot afford energy costs; further notes reports that this crisis will have a profound knock-on impact on health services, including mental health, and calls on the Parliament to take decisive action to ensure equitable access to food through supporting the right to food, and to take action to address hunger and food insecurity in Scotland, particularly noting that ahead of the school summer holidays this pressure may be felt profoundly by families up and down the country.
