To ask the Scottish Government whether it will provide an update on whether it is the case that the Deposit Return Scheme will be implemented on 16 August 2023, and, if so, what further steps are required to achieve this.
Answer
Scotland’s Deposit Return Scheme will launch on 16 August 2023.
In line with the polluter pays principle, and just like similar schemes around the world, Scotland’s deposit return scheme is being delivered by industry. It is for obligated businesses to ensure that they are fully prepared and ready for launch.
The Scottish Government remains engaged by meeting regularly with industry, the Scheme Administrator, and other stakeholders to ensure that implementation remains on track.

To ask the Scottish Government whether it will provide an update on what action it is taking to raise public awareness of the Deposit Return Scheme, and what form any public awareness campaign will take.
Answer
The public communication campaign consists of two distinct phases.
The first, is aimed at business and has started already.
The second, which is aimed at the general public will begin closer to the launch of Scotland’s Deposit Return Scheme and is currently being developed. This is consistent with international best practice.

To ask the Scottish Government whether it plans to bring seaweed aquaculture into the planning process, in line with existing practice for finfish aquaculture, in order that competing community interests in Scotland's inshore waters can be represented.
Answer
We are committed to taking action on aquaculture regulatory reform, which will include the seaweed sector. A consenting task group is being set up by officials that will examine possible improvements in processes and procedures including consultation mechanisms for all aquaculture consenting, while maintaining current roles and responsibilities.
