Scottish Parliament European Committee Tuesday 31 October 2000 (Afternoon)

[The Convener opened the meeting at 14:04]

The Convener (Hugh Henry):

Good morning ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the 18th meeting this year of the European Committee.

Before we move to today's main business, I must formally ask members whether they agree that agenda items 5 and 6, on draft reports, should be taken in private.

Members indicated agreement.

The Convener:

As well as welcoming committee members and members of the press and public to today's meeting, I welcome Catherine Stihler MEP, who has come to listen to our discussions.

Congratulations are in order for two members of the committee. Allan Wilson has become a deputy minister and will be responsible for sport, culture and the arts.

And heritage.

The Convener:

It is a daunting brief, but I am sure that he will cope without any problem—I am delighted for him. I am also delighted for Tavish Scott, who has been promoted to the post of Deputy Minister for Parliament. I am sure that he will carry out his duties commendably. Both Allan and Tavish have been enthusiastic participants in this committee and have made a good contribution. We will miss them. However, I am sure that the committee is delighted for both of them. We wish them all the best.
