Ladies and gentlemen, I am sure that you will be surprised to learn that I am the oldest committee member; I therefore have the privilege of taking the chair. I welcome members to the first meeting of the Environment and Rural Development Committee, which is a new committee that combines two subject areas that were dealt with previously by separate committees. I also welcome the members of the public and the press who are present—some of them are familiar faces.
