Petition

The Public Petitions Committee has passed us a petition from Mr J Ooms. I suggest that we put that on the agenda for next week's meeting and deal with it in public then.

Members indicated agreement.

The Convener:

A decision is required on future business. The committee should note that the meeting that was scheduled for 15 December will need to be rescheduled. We had asked the reporters groups to give their initial thoughts at that meeting. I suggest that they do so instead on 12 January.

Members indicated agreement.

This is a good opportunity to put on record our thanks to Dr John Forbes for all his work on the Arbuthnott report.

Members indicated agreement.

The Convener:

Today we have reached the end of our work on the Arbuthnott report. Our conclusions will be made public on 3 December. Duncan Hamilton is right; John Forbes and the committee clerks have done an incredible amount of work to pull together a very technical and in-depth report. We are right to put on record our thanks to them.

John Forbes has set a standard by which the whole Scottish Parliament will be judged.

When will we receive copies of the submissions on community care, which we will begin to discuss at our next meeting?

Jennifer Smart (Committee Clerk):

You will get the submissions at the end of this week, I hope, or at the beginning of next week—they are sizeable.

That is why I ask.

The Convener:

I expect that the discussion next week about community care will be general and formative. For example, it will give us an idea whether we need a specialist adviser to assist us; it will also give us an idea from whom we want to hear. The submissions are fairly weighty, and I am aware that members have been dealing with Arbuthnott and the Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Bill. The meeting will be a chance to give members their Christmas reading. We can attend to business such as deciding whether we need to tender for a specialist adviser before we start work on community care in the new year.

Meeting closed at 12:33.
