Scotland's island communities depend on regular, reliable, and affordable air and ferry services to travel to and from the mainland.
In June 2026, Loganair Ltd, operator of most air services to Scotland's islands, announced a significant reduction in flights between Inverness and the Western and Northern Isles. It cited concerns about the financial viability of the routes.
The Committee held an emergency evidence session with key stakeholders on 24 June 2026 to examine the impact of the proposed changes and to explore how services could be maintained.
The Committee heard that, for many island residents, these flights are essential. They provide access to healthcare, including appointments and specialist treatment not available locally, and support employment, education, and family life.
The Committee then wrote to the Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Tourism and Transport, drawing his attention to the issues raised.
The Scottish Government subsequently announced new funding for Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL), enabling the full restoration of island air services operating from Inverness from 26 October 2026.
