About the Social Justice and Social Security Committee

The Social Justice and Social Security Committee aims to make Scotland a fairer place.

The Committee's aims and strategy

We will use our scrutiny role to poverty proof legislation by leading the Scottish Parliament and other committees to make Scotland a fairer place.

We seek to scrutinise the Scottish Government and its interaction with the UK Government on social security.

We want to offer ideas to improve and work to help make Scotland a fairer place to live; provide a safety net and promote opportunities for everyone regardless of background, characteristics by ensuring legislation works for disadvantaged and marginalised groups.

In undertaking our work, we will offer a platform and voice for those with lived experience and expert groups. We recognise the lived experience within the Committee and seek to lead by example by being proactive, flexible and participative.

We will work with key stakeholders and communities to build good relationships to ensure we are informed, to expand our discussions; both to listen and to engage and involve people we might not have heard before, or who might not have seen the work of the Committee before and to support capacity building and agency with the public.

How we will work together to achieve this

  • we would like to be open, honest and respectful, with clear processes and communication for raising ideas and concerns, both internally and externally
  • we will seek consensus as much as possible and will record any difference of opinion
  • we want to be a tracking and inclusive committee, seeking to speak to people as much as possible, so that we can get a sense of the reality of social justice and social security in Scotland, and strongly evaluating current policy and benefits
  • we would like to build cross-committee relationships to work on common areas
  • we want to be flexible and pro-active
  • we are interested in using human rights-based approaches/lens in our work
