Introduction of a paramedic student bursary

Letter from Cabinet Secretary for Health regarding the introduction of a paramedic student bursary, 1 July 2021

Dear Gillian,

Introduction of a paramedic student bursary

I am writing to inform you that the Scottish Government will today announce that Scottish-domiciled (home) students studying towards a degree in Paramedic Science, at Scottish institutions, will be eligible for the new Paramedic, Nursing and Midwifery Student Bursary (PNMSB) for courses beginning in September 2021. This will enable paramedic science students to apply for a bursary of £10,000 a year, in addition to becoming eligible for more targeted support.

As you will be aware, the Scottish Government’s approach to supporting students is predicated upon our commitment to a system of free tuition for undergraduate students. That is why the Scottish Government’s package of support for paramedic students is worth more than the £5,000 bursary on offer to students provided by the UK Government, despite the fact they are still required to pay up to £9,250 per year in tuition fees.

The introduction of this bursary for our paramedic students fulfils this Government's pledge to bolster support for this crucial service. Paramedics have been a driving force in maintaining NHS services throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and I am determined to ensure we attract and support the next generation of these vital workers.

Best wishes,

Humza Yousaf
Cabinet Secretary for Heath and Social Care
