SQA response to Muir Review

Letter from the SQA regarding their response to the Muir Review

SQA response to Professor Muir consultation on education reform
Dear Convener

I am writing to provide the Committee with SQA’s response to Ken Muir’s consultation on the future shape of Scotland’s national education agencies. This sets out a positive vision for the creation of a successor organisation, utilising the skills and expertise of SQA and its staff, and with responsibility for:

• a single integrated approach to curriculum, assessment, qualifications and accreditation;

• both academic and vocational qualifications, with parity of esteem between the two and greater availability of vocational courses in schools;

• delivery of qualifications outside Scotland, to maintain and further enhance the global reputation of Scottish education; and

• supporting the teaching profession’s understanding and application of curriculum development, assessment, quality assurance and national standards

The new body also provides an opportunity to be bold in driving forward digital assessment and put learners at the heart of a more collaborative approach to decision-making.

The full text of our response to Professor Muir’s consultation, can be found here.

Until a replacement organisation is established, SQA will continue to work to fulfil its statutory functions and deliver for Scotland’s learners.

This includes delivery of exams and other assessments to schools, colleges, employers and training providers, which learners can have pride in, and which universities, colleges and employers can have confidence in.

I am very happy to discuss further.

Yours sincerely

Fiona Robertson
Chief Executive and Scotland’s Chief Examining Officer
