I fail to see the virtue of a so-called Scottish solution if it results in longer waiting lists, which are up by 20 per cent since 1999, and longer waiting times, which have grown by 21 days since 1997. It is a perverse form of patriotism indeed that prefers a Scottish solution that makes things worse for people in Scotland.

I sincerely trust that, at its next meeting, the Cabinet will find the time to discuss the rising tide of serious crime in Scotland, exemplified by the statistics that came out the other day. During the election campaign, the First Minister said that he was concerned about convicted drug dealers being released early from prison through automatic remission.
