Supported by: Alexander Stewart*, Liam McArthur*, Jeremy Balfour*, Douglas Ross* *S5M-06018 John Finnie: World Humanist Day That the Parliament recognises that 21 June — 2017 is World Humanist Day, which is an annual celebration for humanists around the world; understands that more people than ever before in Scotland are choosing to live their lives by humanist beliefs and values; further understands that Humanist Society Scotland has 15,000 active members and, following legalisation recognising humanist weddings, has married 50,000 people in Scotland; welcomes that Scotland is an inclusive and free nation where humanists and those of other beliefs and none can live and work together peacefully and without fear; notes with concern that, in other states across the world, humanists and others are persecuted, murdered and even face state-sanctioned punishment for their beliefs; supports the work of Humanist Society Scotland, European Humanist Federation and International Humanist and Ethical Union in bringing attention to cases of violence against humanists across the globe, and calls on the Scottish and UK governments to continue to bring pressure on other world leaders to end such persecution where it exists.
