I am interested in the consultation prior to the bill, particularly with the constituent authorities. The authorities may well be used to moneys occasionally being returned to them, but the bill would affect that.
The particular difficulty that Brian Adam has highlighted may not have been a factor in our early decision to take matters off the public record—in effect, to ease the strain on the official report.
We should trust local authorities to take decisions within the financial settlement that they are given, which we may not agree with—we certainly do not agree with it in this case.
Members will be aware that I have taken up the interests of my constituents who are workers at the Continental plant. The minister may wish that I had not, but that is our duty in this Parliament.
