I agree with Richard Baker that the responses represent the final word on our inquiry and report and I do not have much appetite for further work on the matter. To respond to Christine May's suggestion, the last thing that the committee should do is to get involved in discussions about sectarianism.
However, they also receive a great deal of flak, often perhaps unfairly; I may have been responsible for dishing out some of that flak from time to time.
I agree that we should certainly get more information. On Christine May's point, I am not sure that there is any mechanism that would allow us to influence outcomes.
I do not discount the possibility that the arrangements may be changed to secure prior ministerial approval for unescorted periods of leave of absence, but I also want to have a system that operates effectively.
Of course, if the petitioner listens to the debate or even picks up the Official Report, or if his MSP advises him of our conclusions, he may submit a more general petition, which we could run with.
