Supported by: Mairi Evans*, Joan McAlpine*, Jenny Gilruth* *S5M-00206 Murdo Fraser: Scientists Call for GM Crops Rethink That the Parliament ’ — welcomes the reported comments by Professor Venki Ramakrishnan, the president of the Royal Society, that the ban on GM crops needs to be reassessed; understands that a recent report by the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, which was based on 20 years of research, found no substantiated evidence of a difference in risks to human health between current commercially available GM crops and conventionally bred crops, nor did it find conclusive cause-and-effect evidence of environmental problems from the GM crops; notes the House of Commons Science and Technology committee report in February 2015 that called for reform of the regulations on GM crops and recommended that the UK Government publicly acknowledges that GM crops pose no greater inherent risk than their conventional counterparts, and believes that, given what it sees as the substantial scientific evidence, as well as the backing from prominent figures in the scientific community, it is time for the Scottish Government to reassess its approach to GM crops.
