Members' Business motions that have not achieved cross party support *S5M-15458 Angela Constance: 150 Years of The People s Friend That the Parliament ’ — congratulates The People s Friend on its 150th anniversary; recognises that the magazine, which ’ is published by DC Thomson & Co Ltd, is the world s longest-running women s publication, with ’ ’ the first edition appearing on newsagents shelves on 13 January 1869, becoming a weekly ’ publication in 1870: notes that it currently has more than 32,000 subscribers, a circulation of 173,000 and a readership of over 400,000; acknowledges that it was originally a magazine for the whole family in the days before radio or television; recognises that it was first published almost 50 years before women in the UK achieved the right to vote; acknowledges how it has changed over the years, reflecting the changing roles of women in work and society; notes that the first illustrated cover was on the 11 May 1946 edition and that the publication changed from black and white to colour in the 1970s; recognises that it publishes seven short stories in every issue and still welcomes submissions from anyone; believes that it is possibly the last magazine to do so; notes that Angela Gilchrist is only the 10th editor, and the second woman, in the magazine s history; ’ understands that there will be celebrations throughout 2019, including events at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow, an exhibition of original cover art at the Scottish Storytelling Centre in Edinburgh and a series of talks at the National Library of Scotland; recognises that a collector s ’ 150th anniversary special edition is available; acknowledges its contribution to the social history of the Almond Valley constituency and beyond, and wishes The People s Friend continued success ’ for many years to come.
