The bill seeks to ensure transparency in connection with the account that courts take of assistance agreements. If it were widely known that reductions in sentences have been given on account of assistance given by offenders, I think that that would promote confidence in the assistance agreement system and that it would encourage more offenders to offer such assistance in future.
