The question is not meant to be legalistic—I do not know the answer—but is it the case that the Post Office has legal restrictions as to what services other than postal services it can provide, for example financial and banking services? Is not one of the ideas of the Postal Services Act 2000 to liberalise and to widen the range of service on offer?
However, I know that there is regular contact between colleagues in Edinburgh and colleagues in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London to ensure that it has up-to-date promotional materials for Scotland that it can distribute through its network.
Similarly, we have been working with the disability groups to develop an effective database of contacts with groups and individuals that want to be part of the process. Making our databases up to date and effective is an integral part of our work with all other groups.
We will then have to give them a fair amount of time to respond because so many people will be on holiday. So nothing can really begin until after the summer recess.
The human resources unit has given us a commitment that it will try to progress that from here on in. To date there has not been a great deal of staff development training.
