There is a concern that, on the day that warrant sales are abolished, creditors will look for other methods of enforcement. The power of the banks especially concerns me. The Executive does not support the declaration of 25 January as a national holiday and cites as reasons for that view the established arrangements for agreeing public holidays, various practical difficulties of having a public holiday on that date and the fact that an additional holiday would cause disruption to education and industry.The Executive considers that a national Burns day is not required, as Burns's work has been celebrated for more than 200 years, and it is confident that that tradition will continue.
