The electoral registers are always shockingly out of date. People underestimate the fact that, particularly in poorer areas with a high turnover of population, electoral registers can be 10 or 20 years out of date.

I do not think that the arrangements take account of holidays, sickness and so on. I am concerned that some authorities that have only one co-ordinator cover large geographical areas; south-west Scotland is a good example.

Of course, exclusion has a role to play, but it is certainly not a solution, and I do not believe that young people should be rewarded for bad behaviour by being given holidays, especially if they just transfer their bad behaviour to the local community.

From there, I could see social history in the architecture of a wonderful range of buildings, from the fortress of the castle, to the houses of Ramsay Gardens, St Giles cathedral, the Bank of Scotland building that signals the financial centre that Scotland is and the Museum of Scotland, in the opposite direction to the bank.

Adults in lots of working-class communities give up their time free of charge to run play schemes with activities for young people during the summer and Christmas holidays. The big advantage of play schemes is that they are run by adults who know the young people in their area: they live in the same street or round the corner and play with their own kids.
