Next year, the academy will celebrate a decade of its strong partnership with Thawale primary school in the Mulanje district of Malawi, including raising funds for the development of a Mary’s Meals feeding station at the school and the setting up of a scholarship programme to support a number of pupils at Thawale through to secondary education.

Therefore, although Mary Fee might want to paint a doom-and-gloom picture, there are huge reasons for feeling optimistic because, through the actions of the Government, children and young people across Scotland have access to opportunities to participate in sporting activity and are encouraged to do so.

In mentioning the Vale of Leven Boys Brigade, it would be remiss of me not to mention one of the section’s adult volunteers, Mrs Mary Burch, who received the British Empire medal for her voluntary work with the Boys Brigade, Mary’s Meals and other community groups.

I pay tribute to those survivors, who have over many years lobbied for the three-year limitation period for historical childhood abuse claims, also known as the time bar, to be abolished. As Rona Mackay and Mary Fee said, it took considerable courage for those survivors to give evidence to the Justice Committee, and we were most appreciative of that.
