I question the added value that the creation of Communities Scotland and the bureaucracy that goes with it can bring in trying to get more out of local authority community planning partnerships or health board activity.
On the one hand, we do not want to interfere in the day-to-day management of health activities—the professionals should get on with it and do it as well as they can.
The value of the community in developing the arts is that it attracts creative young people. Many young people who get into trouble do so because their creativity is stifled and goes into the wrong sort of things; they are quite creative about their minor criminal activities.
They would not claim to have solved all the problems—some still exist—but they are making huge efforts and there have been huge improvements, particularly in getting children to be more physically active and to eat more nutritious meals at school.There seems to be a national plan to tackle many of those problems.
