I was actually thinking of Rhoda Grant—do not get too presumptuous. The petition merits a lot of support, as it suggests that places in such establishments should be allocated on a fairer and more regulated basis.

Does he agree that that will be a double whammy, which will hinder many young people who are trying to get on the housing ladder? People will realise that the local income tax is a fair system that is based on the ability to pay.

That £24 million scheme is being made available to help many people in Scotland get a foot on the housing ladder. I am sure that there are measures in "Firm Foundations" that Johann Lamont will support as well as many measures that she will criticise.Let us remind ourselves why the initiative is necessary.

As we pointed out in our discussion on the petition on car parking charges at hospitals, one of the first things to happen in this kind of situation is that workers' salaries get squeezed. The same might well have happened in the further education sector over the past decade.
