We cannot just stick an accident and emergency department at a hospital; what lies behind that department is crucial. The Royal College of Emergency Medicine specifies that a full 24/7 accident and emergency service has to be supported by on-site, 24/7 anaesthetic, surgical and critical care cover, and they are not available at the Vale of Leven hospital.
