In a positive step forward, and by way of an update to Mr Stewart’s letter to the committee in May, I can confirm that the Scottish Government has secured a commitment from the UK Government for multi-year funding of £8 million. This money comes from the Union Connectivity Development Fund and was successfully secured following approval of the previously noted business case to undertake design development work on the A75 to bypass the villages of Springholm and Crocketford.

The Government’s intention is for there to be fewer constraints on how that money is spent. The EU structural funds—the European regional development fund—could not really be used on harbours or ports, or even in some other sectors such as tourism, on the basis that there was a separate fund for that, which was the EMFF.

Our Mental Health and Wellbeing Workforce Action Plan (2023) set out actions to support employers in ensuring that the needs of rural communities are met through national work to develop a Health and Social Care Rural Workforce Recruitment Strategy which will also take into account the mental health and wellbeing workforce.As part of this national work and in collaboration with NHS Education for Scotland’s (NES) Centre for Workforce Supply and the National Centre for Remote and Rural Health and Care, we will develop a sustained model of direct support that will provide employers with the help they need to improve recruitment success.
